Previously: Bilbo left the Shire. He left Bag End along with his Ring to his nephew Frodo, aged 33. Now at age 50, Frodo learns from Gandalf that his Ring is actaully The One Ring. He must get out of the Shire because Gollum, has revealed two words to the evil side: Shire and Baggins. Frodo and Sam have created a plan to get out of the Shire. Frodo moves out of Bag End, and to Buckland. With Sam and Pippin they go to Buckland. Merry meets them when they arrived. Frodo is very surprised when he learns that Merry, Pippin, and Fredegar Bolger all know about his Ring and the truth behind his move. He is even more surprised when he learns that Sam was the one who informed them. Merry, Pippin, and Sam all insist that they accompany Frodo. To avoid traveling on the road where the Black Riders will be looking for him and the Ring, Frodo decides to go through the Old Forest.
Chapter 6: The Old Forest
-The hobbits woke at 4:30 and left at 6. This proves that either they are very slow to get ready or all that time was spent eating!
-Fredegar rides with them for an hour, he leaves as they reach the boundry between the Old Forest and the Shire. (The Hedge) Look to the far right of this map:
-The trees "shift"
-The company gets lost within the Old Forest and begin to go into the heart of it rather than out of it.
-Merry shows his heroism, that is not justified in the movies, when he gets an idea of where they are. He recognizes the River Withywindle. It is the oppposite of where they wanted to head.
-Merry leads them through a path that he had discovered. The hobbits get restless and then get exhausted. They fall asleep under a widow tree. (they were avoiding flies) Frodo says he must bathe and eventually falls asleep agianst another tree.
-Sam was the first top wake. While looking for the ponies he comes upon Frodo who is being drowned by a tree root. Frodo was asleep and the tree root was holding him underwater. Sam saves him. (The movies really dont show enough of the other hobbits' heroism)
-They come back to where Merry and Pippin fell asleep and realize that a tree had engulfed the pair. (this is the part in the EE of TTT) They at first try to burn the tree into letting them out but it doesn't work.
- Tom Bombadil saves them from the tree, Old Man Willow. He invites the hobbits to his house.
