Family Ties
disclaimer: None of these characters or places are mine. they belong to Tolkien.
~*~List of OCs:~*~
Thalion: Legolas' best friend Faelon: Elf in Lord Elrond's household. (advisor) Gabriel: Halbarad's young nephew Random orcs: self explanitory Gwathen: Leader of a Ranger settlement
A/N The Angle is located between the River Hoarwell and the Bruinen. It is rumored that ranger settlements were located there. I believe that when Aragorn was accepted into Elrond's household that the Peredhil and Aragorn became family. Estel is the elven name that Elrond gave Aragorn as a child to hide his identity. At age 25 Aragorn met Gandalf. I changed it for the story's sake. Black Essense is a random name that I came up with, it is not a real poison. If you have any questions pm me or email me at TheLilPippin@aol.com.
Also, this was my first story and it was written before I had a beta. I got one during the writing process. (But she is the bestest!) It is not that great and a bit choppy where the plot is concerned. I hope you all enjoy it anyway.
On with the story!

Chapter 1
The man crouched down by the stream, unaware of anything else around him. He was wearing a large black overcoat and unintentionally had his hand on his sword. His shoulder-length wavy black hair drifted in front of his eyes and he pushed it behind his ears, so not to ruin his concentration. This man's name was Estel and all his focus was placed on tracking his prey. Behind him stood an elf. He had long blond hair that reached below his waist. The sides were braided and you could tell that he was a majestic being. He glowed with an aura no one can describe, a kind of enchanted charm. He lifted his head a bit and listened for any movement with his enhanced hearing, but he heard nothing.
"By the Valar, they are good," said the elf, whose name happened to be Prince Legolas of Mirkwood, the Woodland Realm. As he said this, Estel, who had been studying the tracks by the stream looked over at his friend with a grin on his face. He lifted his head a bit and moved his pupils upward. Legolas got the meaning right away and climbed up the tree to their left.
The elf moved with exquisite balance and grace. He was like a cat as he stalked his way to his destination. He came up behind two other beings hiding in the tree. They had hair as long as Legolas' and had the same glow as the elf, but their hair was a deep brown-ish color. They had inherited it by their father, Lord Elrond of Imladris, or Rivendell as it is most commonly known as. They were the twins, Elladan and Elrohir. Elladan was the oldest by 58 seconds and always bragged about him being the older brother.
Legolas leaned over to whisper in Elrohir's ear now and said, "You guys are getting worse. We broke a record this time." Legolas laughed out loud as Elrohir jumped a foot in the air and Elladan turned around to see the Prince of Mirkwood smirking.
"No, our brother just happens to be getting better. I remember last time we hid up here, It took Estel 5 hours just to find us. He was what then, 13? He gave up after awhile and we had to climb down just so he could see that we were alright," said Elladan.
Estel from down below had heard his brothers' and friend's laughter and figured out what they were laughing at. They were laughing at his clumsiness and mortal weaknesses. It wasn't his fault that he was born mortal or that his parents had died, or that Lord Elond had accepted him as his own son.
"Shut up! Elladan, I was young last time. I wasn't going to fall for the hide-up-in-the-tree- because-Estel-can't-climb trick again," Estel said now. Estel watched as his brothers and his great friend climbed down the tree still snickering at the story. He couldn't help laughing along with them as they suddenly had a laughter attack from the look on Estel's face.
After awhile they recomposed themselves, and Elrohir asked, "What was his time?"
Legolas looked at the sun and said, "half-an-hour." With a smile on his face Legolas watched as the two elves took all this in. Their brother could track elves, which was a great skill considering that Estel had lived with elves as long as he could remember, and he had a way of getting in trouble!
Estel smiled weakly at his brothers, and gave a sudden shiver. Legolas looked over at him a little worriedly and Estel nodded that he was fine. Estel hated when the elves fussed over him when he shivered or got sick. The elves were immortal and were immune to sickness. They didn't get old or get sick but they could die if they were slaughtered. In some places there had been stories of elves who had died of grief. Sometimes his elven friends and adoptive brothers would forget that Estel was mortal and was more fragile than they were. He seemed like one of them. Estel had never found out who his parents were and figured he would never find out . He was nearing his 20th birthday soon and the elves were making a big deal over it.
A week ago when Elrond had told Estel of the party they were to have he said, "Ada, you are thousands of years old, as is 'Ro, Legolas, and 'Dan, why are you all troubling over my 20th birthday?" He never got the answer because his father was asked to do some office business.
Now, he said that he was just a little cold especially because it was winter and snow was on the ground. Elrohir and Elladan listened for danger as Legolas handed Estel his cloak. It would keep Estel warm for now. Suddenly they all heard a battle cry, as a scouting party of orcs surrounded them from every angle. The elves had a slight advantage because they could walk on top of the snow. They were worried for Estel, who was more clumsy in snow than the orcs were. They had to trust in his swordsman ship. Legolas brought out his crossbow, Estel brought forth his sword and the twins got out their swords prepared to attack.
They were fatally outnumbered, but they, as of now, had the advantage. An orc approached Estel from behind, and out of instinct Estel swung around the blade, cleanly cutting of the orc's head. All around them orcs dropped dead and all four companions were standing. Estel watched as Elladan fought of a deadly enemy, not knowing of the figure approaching him with his knife raised. All Estel heard was an arrow whizzing by his head and a loud thwump as the orc fell with an arrow in his arm. Estel nodded his thanks to Legolas and pursued in the battle.
He realized now that Legolas had saved him more than once in the 5 years that they knew each other. He would be dead 7 times over if Legolas and him had never met. Suddenly, he felt a sharp pain in his side. He looked down at the nearly dead orc, the one that Legolas thought he had killed. With it's other arm he had slashed the human's side. Estel looked at the knife that did the deed, noticing blood dripping from the blade. That was his blood. In his hazed state he heard the orc say," Bye, Bye, son of Gondor." He looked at his companions in surprise and fell as all went black. He never felt himself hit the ground.
"ESTEL,"Legolas had seen his friend fall face first. Elrohir and Elladan now saw their pale brother lying on the ground. The battle finished out of anger and worry. When all orcs were dead, the 3 elves rushed over to Estel.

Chapter 2
All of them were too scared to see if he was still alive. After awhile Legolas said "I'll do it."
He pressed two of his fingers against his friend's neck, searching for a pulse. It took him awhile to find it, but when he did it was skipping and weak.
The twins were devastated at Legolas' face. "Ai, he still lives, but no wound like that would have an effect that quickly. The blade was poisoned. We must get him to Rivendell," he said in despair.
Legolas looked over at the twins. They no longer were the happy elves they usually were, their brows were creased and the light in their eyes was gone. They were replaced with the hurt worried looks of despair that Legolas had now as well.
" Hold on, mellon nin" Legolas said as he stroked Estel's hair and held his hand. Elrohir whistled softly, calling their horses. He went over to the horse named Glorroh, (Golden Horse) and whispered something in his ear.
"Noro lim, Glorroh, noro lim." He said aloud. To Elladan he said that Lord Elrond would know that something was wrong when he saw Estel's riderless horse. "Don't worry Elladan, Glorroh knows his way home." Elrohir mounted his horse as Elladan helped Legolas get Estel onto his horse so Legolas could watch his progression. He had give Estel his cloak to help keep him warm in the cold winter air. ~
"Estel, no don't go," cried out Legolas. Elladan and Elrohir stopped riding and dismounted their horses at Legolas' cry.
Legolas had been carrying Estel on his horse, they had hoped to reach Rivendell before dark, but the poison in Estel's body was working faster than they thought it would, and he had lost lots of blood. He hadn't been hurt this bad before. Estel wouldn't be able to stay with them much longer. Elladan went out to look for athelas as Legolas tried to slow Estel's breathing and heart. He held Estel close to his chest, and let Estel follow his friend's example. It wasn't working because of Legolas' endless sobbing, but eventually Estel felt his friend's hand pour life into the dying human, and he returned to see joy in his friend again. Legolas had reminded Estel about his importance to his family and friends.. Only that was what brought him back. Estel had woken once and was devastated to see Legolas very grievous. He never wanted to see that face on his friend again. But apparently, that was not what was going to happen.
"Legolas?" Estel said weakly. He wanted Elrond. He wanted Elrond so bad. He knew that they were too far from Rivendell to save him, but he would try to live for the sake of his friends and family.
" Estel, you have to hold on, please. Just keep breathing," but Estel never heard Legolas' words because he felt consciousness leave him once more. Around this time, Elladan returned with the athelas plant that would help slow the poison. He looked at Estel's pathetic face and cried as he applied the medicine to Estel's wound. Legolas was still holding Estel's hand, and said that he nearly died.
"If we get him to Adar, everything will be alright, we just need to hurry," said Elrohir. Little did they know that this wasn't to be the worst. The worst was yet to come.

Chapter 3
As they rode, Legolas felt his friend’s breathing become labored and harsh. Legolas knew the chances of Estel surviving, especially since he had gone without treatment, but all he could do was ride and hope. He didn’t want to believe that Estel might not survive, so he ignored the dread that haunted him. It was probably better off, because though it did not seem like it, he was giving himself something to believe in. To his disappointment, it began to snow some more. The snow was so annoying. He couldn’t feel the cold of the snow, to him it was just a nuisance, but to Estel, it was life-threatening. He felt Estel shudder and knew that he wasn't going to be able to survive in this weather. The elves stopped riding, so Elladan and Elrohir could give their well-sewn elven cloaks to Estel as well. As the twins approached they were unable to look at their brother. The bleeding hadn’t stopped, so he looked lifeless, even though his chest was rising and falling in perfect rhythm.
Estel felt his temperature dropping. He was loosing too much blood and he knew it. He thought he felt the touch of snow, but being only half conscious, he couldn't tell if it was just a dream or reality.
They rode for many hours, and Legolas was pushing the horse further on when, Estel woke up to a fit of coughing. He couldn't breathe well, and each cough seemed like it took an eternity to pass. Legolas was there encouraging him to hold on. And for Estel it was the hardest thing to try to do after so much pain had been racking his body. The coughing fit stopped and Estel was able to look at himself. There was blood all around him, but it wasn't from his side, it was from his coughing. He had been coughing up blood. Before he fell unconscious once again, he was able to say two words: Black Essence.
Legolas heard the words that brought fearsome dread as he caught Estel to prevent him from falling off the horse.
"Elladan! Elrohir! I know what the poison is," he cried. He should've known earlier. This type of poison attacked the lungs the most harmfully. It went through the body, not harming much until it reached the lungs. When it got there, it would cause failing of the lung’s ability to work. The deterioration must have been from the cut, not the poison, the poison was kicking in now, he realized.
" It's Black Essence!" he cried as the twins drew nearer.
"I despise orcs, especially for using a poison that was elf-made. I believed that the last stash of Black Essence had been destroyed in the battle of the Wood-elves and the Mirkwood Spiders." muttered Elladan.
“Apparently not.” said Elrohir as he examined his brother, “ but Legolas is right. There is no doubt, it's Black Essence.”
“ What are we supposed to do?” asked Elladan. With fear in his eyes he whispered only one word, “Pray.”
Chapter 4
Lord Elrond was in his study when Glorfindel, his friend and advisor, came into his room.
“Hir nin, there is something you need to know.” he said with fear clouding his face.
“ Glorfindel, what is wrong?” Elrond asked.
“Glorroh just rode up to the gates. Estel wasn’t with him. We found this note in a bag attached to the saddle.” He gave a roughly folded piece of paper to Elrond.
Ada, Estel is really badly hurt. The blade was poisoned. We are hurrying as fast as we can, get medicine ready! El
Elrond looked up from the note, with tears in his eyes. He knew in his head that Estel was hurt badly, as it was stated in the note, but with all his heart he hoped it wasn’t true.
“Get medicine ready, Estel is hurt.” He muttered to Glorfindel. Elrond ran out of the room and waited impatiently for his sons to arrive home.
After a while he saw three figures in the distance. All three were on horses and one had a big bundle of something on his horse as well. The bundle was Estel, and by the faces of his three companions, he wasn’t doing too well.
“I didn’t want it to be true” Elrond muttered to himself as he helped Estel off the horse, followed by Legolas. No one said anything as Elrond lifted his dying son from the ground and carried him all the way to the House of Elrond where, hopefully, they could save his life.
Estel had been unconscious for more than 3 days when Elrond gave up looking for elvish medicine to cure him. The antidote had been destroyed long ago, when the poison was supposedly “destroyed.” He only had one hope now, and that was for his friend Gandalf to help. So he sent out his friend Faelon, to contact Gandalf. He trusted Faelon with his life, so he would trust his son’s with him too.
Faelon didn’t return until 2 days after he left. That would usually be considered quite fast, but Estel’s condition worsened by the hour, and Elrond was left with less hope. When Faelon did in fact return from Mirkwood, where Gandalf was residing, he brought with him also Legolas’s friend from home, Thalioneru, who was known to many as Thalion or Thal. Lord Elrond was the only person who ever called him Thalioneru. Legolas had known him all his life, and they had been great friends for as long as he remembered. When he left for Rivendell to stay the summer with Estel, Elladan, and Elrohir, he had wanted to come too. Unfortunately, Thalion’s father had been hurt badly by a Mirkwood spider lurking in the forest. Thalion stayed to help heal him since he was the only decent healer in Mirkwood.
Faelon did honor and complete his expectations. Gandalf had come and hope returned to the lord of Rivendell. Elrond always thought that the whole group was like one big party. Elladan, Elrohir, Estel, Legolas, and Thalion, always seemed to be able to have so much fun. The elves didn’t mind having a human in their group, in fact they all grew to love him as a good friend or brother.(in Elladan and Elrohir’s case.) Faelon, Gandalf and Thalion came in very worried, and unlearned about Estel’s condition. Obviously, Faelon filled him in on what had happened, but they all did not know how much he had worsened.
It was worse. Much worse. Estel had been coughing up blood more often. So much blood that his face had turned even paler, if that was at all possible. He wasn’t responding well to any treatment, and he recently fell unconscious again.
“ My Lord Elrond, do not despair. For they say all trace of the poison has been removed from the earth, thus the antidote to it as well. But if the poison still exists, then the antidote must as well. And you have called on the right person. For I was in Mirkwood, investigating the rumor that the legendary poison has been found. While searching, I found the antidote to it. Actually, Thalion did, but that is another story. It is here, somewhere in my pockets.” At these words Gandalf searched through his endless collection of jacket pockets. Finally he held up a small vile of a purple liquid. Elrond looked at the vile with a sudden hope that maybe his son would wake up after all.
“My lord, you are very wearied. Let Thal and Gandalf take over for a while.” said Faelon.

Chapter 5
Lord Elrond was taken up to his bedroom, accompanied by Faelon and Glorfindel. They were worried about Estel, but Elrond’s grief had them worried as well. Gandalf and Thalion went to give Estel the potion and study his condition. Elladan, Elrohir and Legolas were still in the living room of the House of Elrond.
After a few hours of unbearable ignorance, Elrohir began pacing and Legolas fell asleep on Elladan’s shoulder.
Thalion came out of the room to a scene which would never leave his memory. Legolas was sleeping uneasily on Elladan, his head in his lap and him stroking the wood elf’s blond hair. He was awake and Thalion nodded, signifying that he had hope for Estel. Elrohir was pacing just like he had been hours ago. Thalion's expression turned to one of sorrow again as Gandalf stepped out of Estel’s room.
“Everyone, I want you to meet me in the kitchen. Someone get Elrond,” said Gandalf.
Looking worried, Elrohir went to go get his father and his friends. Elladan woke up Legolas, who looked at him uncertainly. He whispered something in his ear and they both got up from the couch.
Withing minutes everyone was in the kitchen looking anxiously at Gandalf. He waited until everyone was seated and made sure that Legolas and Elrond were truly awake by giving them tea with a twinge of hot peppers in it. Not very tasty, they both spit it out instantly, but it did wake them up.
Gandalf and Thalion exchanged looks before Gandalf said, “ You are not going to like this. I regret to tell you that Estel is still alive, but in a coma. We did everything we could to clean up his wound and get the poison out of his system, but he just lost too much blood. I don’t know when he will wake up if he will at all.”
It took everyone about 2 minutes to take all of this in. Elrond broke the silence by saying, “ C-Can I go see him?” Gandalf nodded and Elrond took Glorfindel in for moral support.
They went into his room and looked at Estel in despair. He was very pale and his body was weak and thin. His hair was unkept. Elrond wept into Glorfindel’s tunic.
“What am I going to do? I can’t loose him. Not my son,” he cried out between sobs, unable to control his panic.
“Glorfindel, what am I going to do?” he said uncertainly.
“My lord, you are going to have to support him and try to get him to come back to us,”Glorfindel replied trying to deal with his own grief.
“Yes, I have no doubt that I will do that. But what am I supposed to do if he never wakes and I am left to deal with Gondor on my own. Estel was supposed to fulfill his destiny as King of Gondor, if he dies...” Elrond said trying to take up his status as Lord of Rivendell to no avail. His grief was still too near for him to try to keep up order around the world. That wasn’t supposed to be his job. That job belonged to Aragorn son of Arathorn, King of Gondor, who came to Rivendell as a young child, came to be known as Estel, and who now lied comatose in the bed that the Lord Elrond was unable to look at any longer.
Legolas looked at Gandalf with worry in his eyes and said, “ Gandalf, did he ever wake up, before...” and then trailed off, he couldn’t say it. Estel had always been stronger in spirit than Legolas had. Estel had saved Legolas’ life and shown him how to truly love and appreciate life for what it was.
“He said one thing, ‘don’t leave me, don’t give up hope,” Gandalf replied wearily.
Glorfindel supported Elrond out of the room at that time. Elrond was still weeping into Glorfindel’s shoulder as Glorfindel, with tears in his own eyes, stroked Elrond’s back. He escorted him all the way to his room where he fell into a violent sleep.
Legolas, the twins, and Faelon decided to go in next. Elladan had recently carried Thalion to a guest room, he had collapsed as a result of trying to heal Estel. It had cost him much of his energy. Elladan had returned saying that Thalion was asleep, but now he just wanted to see his brother.
They walked into Estel’s room to the same scene. Elladan and Elrohir rushed to their brother’s side while Legolas huddled against the wall, and seemed to be cowering. Faelon looked at him uncertainly.
“Why do cower, when your friend needs you?”
“It should’ve been me. Or at least I should’ve known to watch him more closely. This is all me fault,” he said with distaste.
“Legolas, this was not your fault, I am sure Estel doesn’t believe that. Come see him." Legolas heeded Faelon’s words and walked over to Estel’s bed. He whispered in his ear, “Mellon nin, you must come back to me. Lasto beth nin. Tolo dan nan galad. Please do not leave me, mellon nin.” But his words were to no avail. Estel remained in the darkness.
He was drifting a black void. He hadn’t heard much, but when he heard Legolas cry out for him to return it brought back the emotions that he had been hiding. This darkness surrounded his whole body. It was terrible for him to hear his friend’s plea but not be able to speak to him, nor give him comfort. He just lay there motionless, darkness filling his soul and hearing the cries he was unable to fulfill haunt his being.
The House of Elrond, which used to be full of sanctuary and love, was now full of fear and worry. Elves hated to go into Estel’s room where he lied looking like death itself. Elrond rarely left his study, Elladan and Elrohir would no longer talk to anyone but themselves, Thalion slept much through the day, saving Estel’s life had drained much more of his energy then he thought, and Legolas was slowly losing more hope for his friend until all was lost. All the while, Estel lay in total darkness trying to return to his family. But his persistence never prevailed.
A/N I do Know that this chapter is a bit hard to follow. Bare with me for awhile. The grammar gets much better!

Chapter 6
Untitled
Finally, all his hard work prevailed and he was able to open his eyes to bright light. After his eyes adjusted he noticed that his room was a mess. There were healing potions all over the place, and stacked in the corner were bloody sheets that had often been replaced. He knew that Thalion had been around because Thal was the only one of his friends who forgot that he preferred one pillow over two. He had two. But it was not his surroundings that scared him, it was the fact that no one was here to see him wake. Surely, they would have waited for him to wake. At least one of them would’ve. He had no conception of how much time had past and he was still extremely weak, so he could not get up. His body refused what he told it to do, he was still suffering from the illness. No one around to comfort him, Estel let tears flow down his face as he wept for the sense of loneliness consuming him. ~
“Elrond! How are being naive, my friend. What if Estel wakes up and there is no one to comfort him! You must go see him!” Gandalf argued.
“As I have told you many times before, I do not believe Estel will wake. It has been 2 weeks since he went into that coma. I doubt very much that he will wake now.”
“You name him hope, and yet you do not have any of your own! Shame on you, for you are influencing your sons. Haven’t you seen them draw away from everything? From life itself. When Estel wakes up, he will be faced with emptiness that someone is going to have to fill. It should be his father, but seeing you weep I have no hope for him,” Gandalf said before leaving the room.
Elrond knew Gandalf was unable to hear him but he said, “He will not wake.”
~ Gandalf walked into Estel’s room, he would need to be injected with his “food.” That was what had been keeping him alive for the past two weeks. But as he walked in the room, he was not pained with the awkward sound of silence, but a small sound of tears. Realizing that Estel had returned to them he rushed over to Estel’s side.
“Estel, look at me,” he said comfortingly. Estel slowly lifted his head and looked into the eyes of the old grey wizard in front of him.
“G-Gandalf?” he said finding his voice for the first time since his coma. “ Where is Ada and Elladan and Elrohir and-and Legolas?”
“Shhhhh! Hush mellon nin. I will get them.”
“No! Please don’t leave me, I-I can’t stand to be alone anymore.”
“Estel, you are never alone.” But he took Estel's advise and instead of going to find everyone, he would bring them to him.
“LEGOLAS! ELLADAN! ELROHIR! COME QUICKLY! Hearing themselves being summoned they rushed to the producer of the screams. As they reached Estel’s room, they met up with Gandalf who said, “ Be slow. He only just woke up to an empty room, and his still crying over the feeling of helplessness and loneliness brought about by its emptiness.”
They all felt shame as they walked over to Estel, who was now sitting up in his bed. They were all over-joyed to see him awake but Estel did not share those feelings. He had just spent two weeks trying to return to a family who had given up on him.
“Hannon le, Legolas. I always thought of you as someone who would give up on your friends,” he said coldly.
Legolas, hurt by the words, felt tears run down his cheeks. ”Estel, I-“
”NO! Legolas I do not want to hear it. I heard you begging me to come back, so I tried. Oh. Legolas I tried so hard and yet I woke up in a deserted room, where it seems like all hope is lost. And it took over 3 hours, judging by the sun, until someone decided to check up on me. When was the last time you came in this room, Legolas?”
His voice getting weaker he said, “ 7 days ago. Gandalf has really been the only one brave enough to enter.”
“Leave me alone. All of you. Now.”
“But Estel-“ Elrohir pleaded.
“LEAVE NOW!"
Gandalf went over to Estel and gently kissed his temple before going with the guilt-stricken elves.
“I know this is probably the wrong time to say this but I told you so,” Gandalf said.
Legolas looked into the twins’ eyes and whispered in shock , “He yelled at me. Told me to leave him alone. What have I done?”
A/N: Okay so it gets better in chapter 10... for now.. deal with the grammar trouble. Oh yeah...I forgot to mention that some characters were "cold" in this chapter.
