Chapter 2(by LilPip)
Chapter II
After situating himself, a fourteen year old Boromir crept into his brother’s room and stalked his way over to the bed. Quietly, he turned his brother over and started tickling him under the armpits. Faramir woke instantly and choked out his laughter. Boromir clapped his hand over Faramir’s mouth to stifle the noise and put his pointer finger over his own mouth to signify that he needed silence.
A now awake Faramir silenced himself instantly remembering the importance upon his early, meaning midnight, awakening. He looked at his brother and grimaced at the absence of the legendary Horn of Gondor, that often made him feel protected. It was why he had so easily agreed when his brother asked him to help search for the missing accessory. Besides the fact that it was gone, Boromir would have to survive his father’s wrath, and that was something that is not easily done. Faramir hated when his brother got into trouble.
The hardest part of “the mission” would have been sneaking out of the city, but fortunately, the brothers had discovered a tunnel running underground from Faramir’s bedroom to the edge of Minas Tirith. Assuming that it was created by their ancestors and was not dangerous, they often used it to escape from the hectic castle life that dominated their lives. It was their secret.
“Hurry up, Faramir! You run like a sissy girl. Pretty boy! Pretty boy!” Boromir teased, his voice ricocheting throughout the tunnel.
“Thanks for the compliment," he whispered under his breath before saying aloud, “Boromir, you intellectually-challenged oliphaunt, keep your loud-mouth voice to a dull roar. Please.”
Although Faramir was far younger than his older brother, five years in fact, he had read more books, written more poems, and knew more words, than his older brother. Boromir had devoted his time to practicing sword play and archery. Faramir was more interested in the theory of language and literature.
“Pretty boy,” was heard throughout the trip until they reached the city walls where Boromir was silenced by his brother’s hand. Faramir threw himself and dragged his brother behind a bush.
“Shh! Someone approaches.” As if on cue, a sentry brought himself into the brother’s view.
After scouting the area and becoming satisfied that nothing was out of place, the sentry went back to his post, leaving the two brothers to escape.
“Where could you possibly have lost it, brother?” Faramir asked.
“Little brother, all I can tell you is that it is gone. Me and Maricus-“
Faramir cut his brother off correcting his brother’s grammatical errors saying, “Maricus and I.”
“Maricus and I were practicing around here,” Boromir continued, pointing to a spot on the ground and redoing all his motions that he went through the previous day, when he had lost the horn. He suddenly smacked his head and realized where it could be.
“Faramir! I got it! It is at the river. Me and Maricus were getting a drink of water and I must have put it down there!”
Over-looking the mistake Faramir said, “Well, what are you waiting for? Go get it!”
“Aren’t you going with me, little brother?”
Faramir shook his head and sighed before whispering, “She told me more than once that the river was dangerous and not to go near it.”
“But Faramir, that was a long time ago.”
“I don’t care. She said that when we were being closely watched by either her or father, we could go, but not when no one is near. I am not going near it when no one is with us.”
Boromir shrugged and went the other way as Faramir stayed in his spot. Boromir had patiently waited for Faramir to get over his mother’s death, but he was with her in her last moments, so it was harder for him than anyone else. He had something that no one else could have. He heard her say her last words, and to this day Boromir and his father did not know what they were. In many ways, Faramir was still close to his mother, even though she had passed to Mandos’ Halls.
Reaching the river, Boromir looked every which way for the Horn of Gondor. He knew that Maricus wanted to go farther down the river bank. So he turned to the left hoping it was the right way.
Just as he was about to give up on the left side, and go back the way he had come, he found it lying symbolically on the ground. For a second it looked broken. Its colors appeared faded and a small crack appeared going across the majestic horn. As he approached it though, it appeared perfectly fine. He grabbed it and ran towards his younger brother who waited patiently for him behind the thick trees that covered his vision of him.
When he go there, he saw Faramir nod and then smile.
"By the way, Faramir, thank you and happy birthday!" Boromir said. The boys turned and started on their way back to the palace, figuring a way to enter the tunnel without being noticed.
