A/N: This is my first HP fanfiction. Please take it soft on me with the reviews. I do appreciate any constructive criticism you are willing to give. I'm sorry if the characters are OOC. I wrote this in a night. I also will admit that I am American so if any words or ideas are not parallel to the British way of things, It is completely my fault. Sorry...
(Edit: Some of my reviewers are asking about the illness. I wrote this story with no medical background at all. The only thing I knew when I wrote it was that he was going to get sick and die. My writing style is to let people guess, which is why I didn't worry too much about researching a certain illness. It lets you guys figure out yourselves what is a possibility. By the way, many thanks to my reviewers! You guys are the best.)
Disclaimer: I do not own these characters or places. They belong to JK Rowling.

Full Moon Shimmering
The young man slept peacefully, a smile on his face. His graying hair, which made him look older than he was, lay matted to his face. His body perspired, and although he felt ill his grin remained as he dreamt his pleasant dreams. This man’s name was Remus John Lupin.
It happened to be one night after the full moon of this month. Not many people really keep track of when the full moon occurs. They will look up at the sky one night and suddenly there it is looming above them in all its glory. Remus, however, always knew the lunar patterns. He feared the full moon’s wrath, with good cause. Whenever a full moon rose Remus’ body twisted in a way no human body should be twisted. The pain was excruciating, but no one understood what he went through. They shunned him with prejudiced eyes. Remus J. Lupin was a werewolf and one night a month he would transform into a monster feared by all people.
When Remus woke the next morning, he went down to the kitchen at 12 Grimmauld Place, where Molly Weasley was making scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast. He nodded to her as he took a seat at the wooden table.
“Good morning, Remus dear. Here eat these, you poor thing. You’re so famished. Eat!” she nagged him, clearly worried about his health. “Your face seems flushed. Are you ill, Remus? Here.” She continued as she levitated him the fever reducing potion.
“Molly, please. I’m fine, honest! I always look a little ill after the full moon.” He said after chuckling. Molly frowned at him not convinced he was telling the truth.
“Seriously dear you look ill. Maybe you should rest after you eat.” Remus nodded. He had no problem going to sleep, he actually longed for it. Because in his dreams he saw them…
Remus ate some of the bacon but only because Molly ordered him to. He really didn’t have an appetite. He made it to the couch where he fell asleep a soon as his head hit the pillow. He entered a realm where all he ever wanted was laid out in front of him.
He sat by the lake with his best friends, Sirius Black, James Potter, and Lily Potter. The full moon’s reflection shimmered on the lake's surface. But Remus was not a werewolf. The wolf no longer had control over him, he was gone.
Remus sighed. Every night he would come here and sit silently with his friends. They never spoke. They never laughed. They just sat next to Remus and smiled. Their silence always reminded Remus of the fact that it was just a dream.
“…Just a dream” he said silently.
“It doesn’t have to be.” James said. Remus jumped at the voice, he hadn’t heard that voice in nearly 17 years. He looked at his dead friend curiously. What did he mean?
When Remus woke again, it was about noon. The house was in a ruckus, everyone was running around in a blur of color. He was able to make out Tonks by her bright yellow hair. Everyone else was indistinguishable.
“Stop,” someone yelled. Remus winced, the sounds was still resonating in his head. Tonks came up to him and felt his forehead. She noticed that it was still burning.
“Remus can you hear me?” she asked quietly. He nodded. “We are taking you to Mungos. You were trashing in your sleep and we couldn’t wake you.” Remus tried to protest, he didn’t need to go to the hospital, but Molly stopped him before he could start.
Soon he was lying in a hospital bed at St. Mungos Hospital. He had been given the required outfit, the doctor had performed some tests, and now all he could do was wait for results. He pouted. He had no reason to be here, it was just PMS. (Post Moon Stress) Or was it…? He had been feeling weak lately and he had lost his appetite. He also had been having cold spells in the middle of spring. Just maybe he was sick.
He knew that by now Harry had been informed. He would obviously be worried. Remus was the last person who really knew his parents. Remus didn’t want Harry to worry, he didn’t deserve all this pain. However, pain and Harry James Potter seemed to know each other very well.
Tonks, Molly, Bill, and a few others from the Order, were in the library. Now, they weren’t reading for pleasure. They were researching. They needed to find a cure. One of their members had a muggle illness that wizards did not know how to cure. And it was killing him. They just didn’t understand; how could a man full of life a few days ago be dying? It didn’t make any sense.
They were getting no where. It had been a week since they brought Remus to Mungos and his condition was rapidly declining. The doctors said that he could leave at any time. The Order still gathered around a stack of books all prayed for a miracle.
Remus now could barely move his arms or legs. He was too weak to do much of anything. Dumbledore sat with him, urging him to hold on, to keep living. In his heart he knew that Remus’ life was ending.
“Where’s Harry” Remus asked weakly.
“He went to the library to help search for it” Dumbledore replied. He didn’t need to specify was “it” was. Remus knew that he meant a cure. They were wasting their time, he knew that if there was a cure, it would not be found in time.
He could feel death weighing on him. It would happen very soon. However, he wasn’t going to leave without setting a few things straight.
“Albus, you know that I am going to die. Promise me that you will do whatever you can to protect Harry. Treat him like family, be there for him. Tell him that I am in a better place, that I am reunited with the ones that I love. Tell him-“ He had to stop and take a breather. He was tiring a little to quickly.
“Tell him I love him and that we will be watching over him. He will see us again some day, but not now. Do not let him despair, Albus! Promise me.”
Albus nodded and muttered “I promise,” his eyes glistening with tears.
Remus was dosing. His eyelids felt heavy as he struggled to keep them open for a little while longer. Harry now sat asleep in a chair near the bed. When he slept he looked younger, more innocent. One could almost forget the weight he held on his shoulders…Almost…
Remus jumped, he had fallen asleep for a second. Wait…something was on the bed. Remus could feel it breathing. He moved his head to the side to try and see what he was looking at. A big black dog, was asleep on his bed.
“Sirius?"
Suddenly pain coursed through Remus’ veins. It was time. The dog jumped up and disappeared. Harry jolted awake. But by the time the doctors came rushing in, Remus’ vision had blackened and his heart had stopped beating. The room was full of tears that night…
Remus sat next to his three best friends as the full moon shimmered on the surface of a lake. Remus was not a werewolf anymore, the werewolf had been banished from Remus’ body. His three friends sat next to him on the shore, awaiting his reaction to his first full moon free of the torment. Remus’ head fell onto his knees as his body shook with sobs of joy. Sirius Black took Remus in his arms and smiled as his best friend finally felt what he wanted all along. He was happy, and finally the true Marauders were together again. They would never be separated.
