Marauder Era: Year 3
Remus J. Lupin ran down the many corridors in Hogwarts Castle as his two best friends tagged along behind him. They were going to be late for transfiguration and if McGonagall was in a bad mood, she would have their hides.
“Move, good-looking 3rd years with great senses of humor late for class. Move! Yes there you go. Thanks.” Sirius Black said as they passed a group of 1st year girls entering a classroom. The girls started giggling and Sirius waved his hand as he turned to go down the next hall. If Remus wasn’t so worried about being late for 3 classes in a row he would’ve raised an eyebrow. Sirius Black was a ladies-man and he wasn’t afraid to show it.
“Just a bit further-“ James panted as a bell rang from above them the sound ringing in their ears. Sirius cursed.
“Shoot!” Remus hung his head. What a great way to start the day, especially on this day.
When they entered Professor McGonagall’s classroom, she gave them a scowl and they knew for sure that she was not in a good mood.
“That’s three in a row, boys. See my after the lesson so we can talk about your detention. Now go sit down!” James and Sirius hurried to their seats afraid to push McGonagall’s buttons any further. Remus sat down next to Peter dejectedly.
“Can you explain to me why you were late again? Mr. Potter?”
“ W-ell...errrr... you see..” James tried to say but ended up merely shrugging his shoulders.
“Its my fault Professor,” Remus spoke up, “I had a nightmare and I was too out-of-it to eat breakfast. Sirius and James were just worried about me and decided to check up on me. I was throwing up when they found me and they stayed until they knew I was alright to come to lessons.” It wasn’t really a lie. He did have a nightmare, and he did wake up vomiting, and Sirius and James had checked up on him, but he was actually fine by the time they had gotten there. He failed to mention that on the way to lessons they had a small rumble with Severus Snivelly Snape in which the victim was pelted with dungbombs. Thinking about it, Remus realized that it was worth it. Nothing could beat the look on Snivelly’s face. It would’ve been perfect if that stupid bell hadn’t rung before they were in the classroom.
McGonagall was unsure whether to believe Remus or not. Her expression softened as she remembered what today was. Regardless, he knew she had to give out detentions.
“5 points each from Gryffindor for your tardiness. James, Sirius you will see me tonight for detention. I want you to organize my bookcase,” The thirteen year olds groaned. McGonagall’s bookcase was enormous and the books were shoved wherever the previous reader felt like putting them. “And they are to be alphabetized.” It was going to be a long task.
“Remus, you will see me tomorrow night for obvious reasons. I will tell you what you are going to do then.” Remus nodded. “Here’s a pass to your next class. If I find out that there are any detours I will take away more points.”
Remus handed the pass to the Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor. He enjoyed learning from this professor and felt comfortable around him. It was something Remus didn’t usually do, because of his condition people often shunned him, but he knew that the Professor was a kind and decent person. As he headed back to go to his seat, he saw Professor Kitrino flash his eyes towards the teachers desk. It was a warning he soon found out. Lying open on the teachers desk was a their textbook on page 394... the chapter about werewolves. Remus paled but he nodded slightly as he went to his seat. No one seemed to have noticed the exchange.
“Okay class, now that we are all here, we will begin the lesson. The next unit in the curriculum is about werewolves,” a shudder when through the classroom,” which we will be studying for the next few weeks. A test will be given at the end of the unit and some of the questions might make their way onto the final exam so pay attention or you will be lost. Lets start with something simple, who can tell me the difference between an animagus and a werewolf?”
Remus found himself zoning out. This was bad news, with the class learning about the symptoms of the werewolf it was more likely that they would realize his secret. Obviously, James, Peter, Sirius, and Lily knew, but Remus wasn’t about to trust anyone else. Most likely they would shun him because he turned into a monster one night a month.
Sirius looked over at Remus concerned. The young werewolf was lost in thought, but his pallor had whitened. He had to admit that considering, Remus was handling it well. If he had not have known about Remus he would’ve thought that the boy was merely slightly sick, not that he was partial to the talk about werewolves.
“Professor, But aren’t werewolves killers. They hunt humans and eat them. You’re making it sound like they are innocent!” One student from Hufflepuff spoke up later. Remus looked ready to hurl, something he had been doing way to often in the past week. This transformation was going to be just wonderful.
Without raising his hand before speaking Remus said, “You don’t understand! Its no one’s fault that they become a werewolf. It’s a wrong place wrong time kind of thing and it can happen to anyone: a young child at age of 3 or an old man at 93. It happens to both muggles and magical people, and for the rest of their lives they live in torture. Any small amount silver irritates their skin, and if it gets in the body it becomes fatal. The transformations are worse than the Cruciatus Curse, the victim can feel every part of their body twisting in a fashion that bodies are not supposed to be twisted in. And the next morning when they wake up after transforming they have to live with the fact that they may have killed another person or animal. And THEN the society turns their back on them and considers them beasts when they are really just victims who lose control of their humanity 12 nights a year. It’s unjust!” The room had gone silent as Remus spoke, the students taking in what Remus had said.
It was lucky, Sirius thought, that Remus was a good student and his random outbursts over the most random things happened frequently. Otherwise, this little incident would’ve looked mighty peculiar. Sirius decided that he had to break the silence.
“Jeez, Rem... how do you know so much about this?” he said while winking, which Remus saw quite clearly but no one else noticed.
“Honestly Black! Don’t you ever read?” Sirius blinked at him. “ I read a book once written by a werewolf. It changed my view on werewolves as soon as I read the first page. Living with the Wolf by Lykaon Thymos.”
Professor Kitrino jumped in at this point saying, “ I think your first project in this unit will be to read a book detailing the life of a werewolf and writing an essay on how the book affected you. Okay right now we are going to learn some more about identifying a werewolf when you see one. Let’s focus on this alright?”
After DADA Remus had to go to the Hospital Wing. Trying to get through all his classes had been a bad idea. His stomach was churning and his head was splitting. Well, he had tried to make it through the day and that was something. When he arrived, Madame Pomfrey gave him a dreamless sleep potion and told him to sleep until the they had to leave later that night. Remus didn’t need to be told twice. His head fell onto the white feather pillow and he let his mind wander until he fell into a sleep void of his nightmares.
After Remus had left, Sirius had just a few more classes. Luckily, between him and James, all the work needed for Remus’ classes had been taken care of. After the transformation Remus would either stay in the hospital wing or in the common room going over everything he had missed for about the whole day. And after that he read. Sirius and James most definitely agreed that their friend Moony, as they called him, needed to get out more.
As soon as their classes were over James, Peter Pettigrew, and Sirius met outside the hospital wing. When Madame Pomfrey gave the book the “OK” they proceeded to Remus’ bedside. The young werewolf was sleeping and none of the boys had the heart to wake their friend. Besides they knew that if Madame Pomfrey found out that her patient was awake she would throw them out of the hospital wing without thinking about their egos. Last time, their ears were red for a week and a half.
For the next few hours they sat next to Remus’ form and did their assigned work. When they got bored of doing, which didn’t take too long, that they played Exploding Snap until Madame Pomfrey came and lectured them for playing something loud while Remus was sleeping.
“But Madame Pomfrey, he didn’t even wince in his sleep,” said Peter. It was true; during the game Remus had remained ever still and ever silent.
Then they played chess.
Later that night James, Sirius, and Peter were thrown out of the hospital wing as Madame Promfrey prepared Remus. She woke up the sleeping form gently. Remus groaned as the light hit his eyes full force. She grabbed a blanket before nodding to the thirteen year old to come with her.
As the three Marauders made their way toward the Gryffindor tower Sirius rubbed his red ears. He had refused to leave the first time he was told, a choice that would not be made ever again.
“Poor Moony,” said James, “this one is going to be really rough for him.” Sirius and Peter nodded in agreement.
“Well it gives us some more time to study IT” Sirius said trying to lighten the mood.
“Definitely,” replied James, though he didn’t sound convinced. They all knew that tonight was going to be rough for the other Marauder.
How right they were.
